How We Detox:
Let’s start out with some fun ways to detox from technology. Here is a list of ways to detox. There are ways to improve your physical health, mental/emotional health, relationships/social health (The worst is sitting next to someone/or out to eat with someone but instead of engaging they are glued to a screen), financial health (Look for the $ next to ideas. These actually might save you some cash).
Physical
-Go for a hike (somewhere in the mountains, at a local forest preserve, anywhere)
-Join a group fitness class
-Go for a walk around your neighborhood
-Join a walking group (look /on Meetup)
-Meditate
-Do some gentle yoga or stretching in your living room.
-Ride a bike (don’t have one, lots of cities have bikes you can rent at bike docking stations all over the city)
Food
-Meal prep $ (make your lunches for the week on Sunday night)
-Make a dish from ingredients already in your kitchen $
-Take a cooking class
-Cook from an actual cookbook
-Go to the local farmers market $
Family and Friends
-Organize a game of kickball
-Go on a picnic
-Board Game night
-Hold a dance party
-Watch your child play
Relax
-Go to the library and read a book
-Plant a garden or a potted plant on your balcony
-Watch the sunset and the sunrise
-Go to sleep early
-Create a gratitude list (reflect on everything in life you are thankful for)
-Take a bubble bath and read a book
-Journal (about your day)
-Write a letter to a friend or family member and mail the letter
Work
-Take a lunch break away from work and away from your phone and computer
-Instead of emailing someone, walk to their office to talk to them
Get Away
-Go on a digital detox retreat (they exist)
-Go camping
Limiting Technology
-Minimize your number of TV channels (who needs hundreds of channels) $
-Delta apps that cause distraction
-Use less devices (do you need a phone, laptop, tablets ,etc)$
-Drive to work without the radio (time to think)
-Use the ShutApp (it is free and easy to use, timer app that helps you and your friends to take a break from your phone, and to enjoy the real moments)
-Use the Nights Keeper (do not disturb) app (Nights Keeper blocks all calls, but “white list” contacts will be able to go through. You can specify separate contacts or groups in your exceptions list).
-Store your smart phone in a drawer at home for the night
-Put your phone in the backseat while you drive (so you are not temped to look at the phone)
-Clean up your inbox (unsubscribe to junk email)
-Let people know your technology preference (such as “if you need to get ahold of me call me instead of contacting me on social media because I might not get your message right away because I’m not checking social medial as often”)
